P.E.

Our P.E. days this term are Wednesday and Friday. Please ensure your child comes to school in their P.E. kit, which is suitable for outdoors (including appropriate footwear). Your child must also wear their blue federation hooded jumper. Children with long hair need to have this tied up for these lessons and any jewellery, including earrings, need to be removed. For swimming (Year 6), girls will need to wear a one-piece swimming suit and boys must wear close fitting swimming trunks, no longer than mid-thigh in length.

Homework

Homework is sent out every Thursday/Friday and is due back in school on the following Thursday.

Every week, children are expected to complete a piece of English homework, which is punctuation and grammar based, linked to their current learning. Additionally, children are expected to complete a piece of Maths homework, based on improving their basic mathematical understanding and they also have the option of practising their times tables using Times Table Rock Stars to improve their mental recall. They also have access to www.edshed.com, with their login in the front of their reading record, to access spelling through games.

We will be doing a weekly spelling test. The spellings for the week that your child will be learning, can be found in the back of their homework book. Your child should learn the next ten unhighlighted words on the sheet. Your child has been tested on these words and have been able to spell the ones that are highlighted. As they learn their spellings each week and get them correct, these will then be highlighted and they move onto the next ten that are unhighlighted. We would appreciate your support with this. Once the statutory expected words have been achieved, your child will move onto the weekly words we will be learning in class.

Please ensure your child reads at home daily, as this is vital for developing their comprehension skills, widening their vocabulary and supporting them with their writing. The children will have two reading books – an ability book and a challenge book. Books will be changed regularly at school and should be brought in every day to be checked by an adult. Children who read more than three times per week, will gain extra playtime as a reward. For each day your child reads, their name will be entered into the Reading Raffle, where they have the opportunity to win a book each half term.

If your child is struggling with any aspect of their homework, we are always available to support them: they just need to ask.

History and Geography

Topic

This term’s topics are: The Victorians and Climate Zones, Biomes and Vegetation Belts: Why is the world different from place to place?

The Victorians

Let’s forge ahead to research a time when Victoria was Queen and Albert was Prince Consort, and when some people lived in slums while others prospered. Let’s delve into the British Empire, the largest the world had ever seen, when Queen Victoria was head of nearly a quarter of the world’s population.

Discover a time when great minds thought new thoughts and ingenious inventors created so many things we take for granted today: the electric lightbulb, the telephone and even the first flushing toilet! Shall we take a visit to the Great Exhibition? Yes, let’s go!

Full steam ahead to the Victorian age!

Climate Zones, Biomes and Vegetation Belts: Why is the world different from place to place?

Pupils will use thematic maps, climate data, photographs and local evidence to explain why climate zones, biomes and vegetation belts vary across the world. They will compare South Holland with contrasting global locations and use evidence to explain how location, climate, vegetation and human activity are connected.
