Westmere Primary School

Welcome to Brazil Class

Class Teacher: Miss Sage

Teaching Assistants: Miss Cawthorne and Miss Emmins

Our P.E. days this term are Wednesday and Friday. Please ensure your child comes to school in their P.E. kit, which is suitable for outdoors (including appropriate footwear). Your child must also wear their blue federation hooded jumper. Children with long hair need to have this tied up for these lessons and any jewellery, including earrings, need to be removed.

Homework is sent out every Friday and is due back in school on the following Thursday. Every week, children are expected to complete a Reading Scrapbook activity, which can be based around their current reading books, alternatively it can be a book of their own choosing. They also have a piece of English homework, which is punctuation and grammar based, linked to their current learning. Additionally, children are expected to complete a piece of Maths homework, based on improving their basic mathematical understanding and they also have the option of practising their times tables using Times Table Rock Stars to improve their mental recall.

Please ensure your child reads at home daily (either independently or adult-led), as this is vital for developing their comprehension skills, widening their vocabulary, and supporting them with their writing. The children will have three reading books – an ability book, a challenge book and a love for reading book. Books will be changed regularly at school and should be brought in every day to be checked by an adult. Children who read more than three times per week, will gain extra playtime as a reward.

If your child is struggling with any aspect of their homework, we are always available to support them: they just need to ask.

Autumn Term Topics

In science we will identify that animals, including humans, need the right types and amount of nutrition, and that they cannot make their own food. We will learn that they get nutrition from what they eat and the importance of a healthy balanced diet. We will then identify that humans and some other animals have skeletons and muscles for support, protection and movement.

Geography – Holidays

By the end of this topic, children will have a better understanding of different holiday destinations and know key landmarks in popular areas. Children will also use an atlas to identify the coordinates of these locations, and look at the landscape around these, learning new vocabulary to help describe them.

History – Stone Age to Iron Age

This term we will be finding out about the Stone Age to Iron Age.  We will look at significant events within this time and place them in order, discussing chronology.  We will find out how timelines can be split into BC and AD and what these letters mean. We will look at the difference between these two ages and how things changed over these times.
