Westmere Primary School

Welcome to Australia Class

Class Teachers: Mr Allcorn

Teaching Assistants: Mrs Ryan, Miss Stubbs, Miss Giddens & Miss Ryan

Our class is made up of wonderful year 1 and year 2 pupils and this year our teacher is Mr Allcorn. We also welcome our amazing support staff who work incredibly hard with all the children. They are Mrs Ryan, Miss Stubbs, Miss Giddens & Miss Ryan.

We like to stay active, and we carry out daily yoga sessions to help with our physical development and core stability. Friday is our day for P.E. Please ensure your child comes to school in their P.E kit which is suitable for outdoors (including appropriate footwear). Your child must also wear their blue federation hoodie.

Reading is extremely important so please listen to your child read as often as you can. Children on RWI will bring 2 RWI books home. The paper book will be the storybook they are reading in their RWI sessions. The second book is linked to one of the books they have read in their RWI sessions. These books will be changed every 3 or 5 days depending on their RWI group. It is important for children to re-read stories. Not only does this help with their fluency but also enables them to develop a stronger understanding of the story. Each time they read their RWI books, please write in their reading records to say they have read at home.

Please make sure reading books are returned to school. If your child loses their reading record or books, then please let us know so we can send new books home.

Homework – In Australia Class we think it is important for children to enjoy practical activities with the adults who look after them. Each half term, Mr Allcorn will send home an activity pack which shares ideas and practical activities to complete. The activities promotes both learning in the inside and outside environments.

Our topic this term is ‘Wriggle and Crawl.’
We will be exploring minibeasts and learning lots of facts about insects from non-fiction books. The Very Hungry Caterpillar will be our core story book for this topic where the children will find out information about life cycles, anatomy of different insects and how to use scientific resources correctly. The children will be busy hunting for minibeasts, building bug hotels, using bug pots and magnifying sheets and spending a lot of time at the investigation station.
